Paris and Amsterdam unite in this mind-bending performance.

The Amsterdam City Theatre (Stadsschouwburg), in association with the Paris City Theatre (Théâtre de la Ville), presents the play Six personnages en quête d'auteur, one of the many delights of their long-lasting collaboration.

About the play

In this fascinating story, a group of actors and a director rehearse a play when suddenly, six new characters appear: a mother, a father and four children. They have been abandoned by the writer of the play they are supposed to be in!

The six characters are yearning to tell their story and they need the help of the actors to “play” them in order to make them real. This brings all sorts of conflicts because the characters also want to live their own lives and not only be portrayed by actors.

Six personnages en quête d'auteur, or Six Characters in Search of an Author, was written by the Italian playwright Luigi Pirandello in 1921. At its premiere, Pirandello had to exit silently through a side exit to avoid the haters! However, it was a huge success after performances that followed.

A Dutch premiere

The play has previously been performed by the famous Toneelgroep Amsterdam abroad, however this performance by the Paris City Theatre group, directed by Emmanuel Demarcy-Mota, is the first time that the play is being performed in the Netherlands.

More Parisian theatre coming to Amsterdam soon

Don't miss the other Paris-Amsterdam collaboration, the play Deux mille dix sept, (or 2017) featuring the renowned choreographer Maguy Marin and her company. This will be performed at the Amsterdam City Theatre on April 16 and 17.
