The Indian film industry, right from the time it began, has always relied heavily on singing, a feature that has continued up to the present day. Most of the actors are lip-syncing and the songs are sung by playback singers. Asha Bhosle began her career in 1943 as a playback singer in films ranging from low-budget to critically-acclaimed box-office successes, continuing as a playback singer for over 65 years and cementing a big name for herself in the art form.
Asha Bhosle has recorded a lot of music outside the cinema genre as well. She is known for her solo singing as well as collaborations with other big names in India, such as duets with Mohammed Rafi. In 2013, Asha made her debut as an actress in the film Mai, and received critical acclaim for it.
The 1997 song “Brimful of Asha” by British Rockband, Cornershop, was dedicated to Asha Bhosle. It became wildly successful after it was remixed by the DJ Fatboy Slim.
