Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde at Muziekgebouw brings a focus to top Dutch solo classical musicians, in an evening of cinematic classic brilliance.

A silent horror movie with live music

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde brings you back to the silent movie era with the creepy 1920 movie masterpiece, accompanied by the Ferschtman Cello Quartet.

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is a classic horror story that is constantly quoted and referenced. Dr Jekyll is a respected surgeon, working in Victorian London. He is interested in the duality of the human mind and the dark side of the personality. His experiments succeed in separating man’s good and evil traits, leading him to explore his dark side as the ruthless Mr Hyde. The transformation from Dr Jekyll to Mr Hyde is one of the most memorable plots in the entire horror genre.

This 1920s classic from the heyday of silent cinema was directed by John S. Robertson. John Barrymore, a celebrated Shakespearean actor of 1920s America, plays the roles of the titular characters and manages to transform from good to evil without even the use of makeup or special effects.

Eminent Netherlands-based international musicians

The music accompanying this eerie film is an original composition by Amsterdam-based German composer Florian Magnus Maier. As well as being one of the prominent composers based in the Netherlands, Maier is also a celebrated heavy metal musician and has collaborated with artists like Devin Townsend and Paradise Lost on orchestrations in metal compositions.
