Cinderella at the Dutch National Ballet
Cinderella, one of the most famous fairy tales of all time, whisks you to a fantasy world at the Dutch National Ballet.
A dark, poetic Cinderella
This staging is darker and more poetic than the Cinderella most people are familiar with, based on the original version popularised by the Brothers Grimm, as well as the 1945 ballet version by Prokofiev.
Christopher Wheeldon is the brains behind this choreography, which was awarded a Prix Benois de la Danse, the equivalent of the Oscars in the dance world!
A new and epic libretto, in collaboration with American playwright and screenwriter Craig Lucas has given Cinderella a new edge. According to Christopher Wheeldon: “Cinderella is not the victim and drudge she’s often portrayed as being; I see her as more in control……she shoulders her burden with her head held high and a sense of inner pride.”
Cinderella – a cinematic dance experience
A cinematic dimension, with the visual projections by multimedia artist Daniel Brodie, brings the fairy tale ballet into the 21st century.
There is also the unusual element of puppeteering by Basil Twist and set design and costume design by Julian Crouch that takes you away from a Dutch autumn right to another world, full of glass slippers, mice transforming into footmen and a pumpkin morphing into a carriage to whisk Cinderella away.
