Camera Japan Festival
Are you interested in Japanese movies (with English subtitles!) and culture? Do you want to try delicious food and learn more about Japanese tea and sake? Then you can’t miss out on the 16th edition of CAMERA JAPAN Festival, which will take place in Rotterdam (September 22-26 ) and Amsterdam (September 30 - October 3).
Japanese film, visual arts, music, dance, fashion, architecture, food and more
CAMERA JAPAN is a Japanese cultural festival organised in Rotterdam and Amsterdam every year since 2006. The main focus is on film, but it also explores the visual arts, music, dance, fashion, architecture, food, and much more.
Besides watching more than 40 films, you can take part in all kinds of workshops (ranging from calligraphy to flower composition), tea tastings and bring your little ones to the Kids Day.
Film programme at CAMERA JAPAN
The 16th edition of the festival will be opened at LantarenVenster on September 22 with the European premiere of Motoki Katsuhide’s Angry Rice Wives. The screening will be preceded by a taiko dance performance.
The yearly unofficial kick-off will be held on September 22 at WORM with a screening of the experimental LUGINGKSY and the short film Project Tanuki.
With two international and nine European premieres, the festival consists of a special and exclusive programme. Among the big-name directors who will present their new work in the Netherlands are SONO Sion (Red Post On Escher Street) and KUROSAWA Kiyoshi (Wife of a Spy, winner of the Silver Lion in Venice). Films such as My Name is Yours and Jun Kasai, Crazy Monkey, will have their first screenings outside of Japan at CAMERA JAPAN Festival.
Several classics will be shown as well, including the horror masterpiece The Ghost Cat and the Mysterious Shamisen (1938) and the influential yakuza film Tattooed Life (1965).
As usual, animation films will be present at CAMERA JAPAN Festival. Besides a handful of animated shorts, the festival will show special stop motion Junk Head, the imaginative The Deer King, and the colourful Pompo the Cinephile.
Lectures, workshops and exhibitions at CAMERA JAPAN
Besides offering a rich variety of Japanese films, the festival also includes several cultural and culinary workshops and photo exhibitions. The four workshops consist of flower composition, calligraphy, tea tastings and sake tastings. On Sunday in Rotterdam, there is a special event for children called Kids Day. This year, kids can make their very own Uchiwa fan, learn how to write their own name in Japanese and watch a selection of short animated movies.
Last but not least, the festival also includes an exclusive lecture by Dr. Michael Crandon (Leiden University), who will speak about the origin of Japanese Horror, titled “Before J-horror: The Origins of the Japanese Horror Film”.
