The Cauldron presents The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, a brilliant and hilarious musical theatre show about the lead-up to a spelling competition for pre-teen American children.
About the show
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee has wowed audiences all over the world with its effortless wit and humour. Based on a fast-paced, wildly funny and touching book by Rachel Sheinkin and a truly fresh and vibrant music score by William Finn, this show is one unforgettable experience.
The story follows six kids competing for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While openly sharing amusing and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of hilariously unlikely and often made-up words, hoping to avert the soul-destroying "ding" of the bell that signifies a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter - one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box.
The cast is fun and eccentric, where grown adults portray guileless middle school kids and their teachers and parents. Get tickets and see for yourself.

The Cauldron is a performing arts foundation dedicated to bringing diverse and innovative English-language musical theatre to Amsterdam for amateurs and semi-professionals. They are committed to providing a space where new artists can hone their craft among professionals and semi-professionals.
Amsterdam is home to between 80.000 and 110.000 expats who all speak English as a common language, and yet there are only a small handful of theatre companies that put on shows in English. The Cauldron engages with the expat community, and contributes to the arts economy by targeting an audience that currently doesn't have many opportunities to enjoy musical theatre in the Netherlands. At the same time, they aim to enrich the musical theatre scene for Dutch audiences as well.
