About Only the sound remains

Only the sound remains is one of the main performances of the special Opera Forward Festival. The production is a never before performed masterpiece based on two Japanese Nôh dramas. It will be directed by the renowned Peter Sellars, and composed by Finnish Kaija Saariaho, who is known for her electro-acoustic works.

Like in Nôh theatre, movement in the performance is careful and minimal, increasing the tension, concentration and symbolism on the stage.

Peter Sellars

Peter Sellars is a world-renowned American opera and theatre director, known for reinventing classics by turning them into socio-political queries.

Two stories of heaven and earth

The two stories that will be performed focus on a meeting between the heavenly and earth:

Always Strong

A young lute player returns to court after suffering a violent death, and finds that he can no longer obtain the physical pleasure of playing sensual and heavenly music. His spirit touches the lute and disappears. "Only the sound remains".

Feather Mantle

A fisherman finds an angel’s feather mantle and refuses to give it back to her unless she dances for him. She convinces him to hand the mantle back first, and as a reward she dances with heavenly music and ascends to the sky. "Only the sound remains".
