Win a Dutch course at Leiden University’s Language Centre

IamExpat, in cooperation with Leiden University’s Language Centre, is offering a Dutch language course for FREE!

About the competition

Languages offer an interesting window on people's perception of the world surrounding them. A closer look at the Dutch language may reveal concepts, attitudes and opinions, which are part of the Dutch heritage. Native inhabitants of the Netherlands may not even be aware of the underlying values transported by the language that is an integral part of their being Dutch.

Therefore, expats living in the Netherlands are an interesting source of information about hidden aspects of the Dutch culture as expressed by the Dutch language.

How to participate

Can you come up with a Dutch proverb or idiomatic expression which reveals underlying or hidden preconceptions of the Dutch people? Describe how the proverb or idiomatic expression is characteristic of the Dutch way of viewing the world and highlight the difference with your own native language!

Please send your reply together with your name and phone number by December 18, 2014, to:
Talencentrum[at]hum.leidenuniv[dot]nl

Submissions (500 words maximum) should be in English and will be assessed on the basis of:

  • logical structure of the argument, and
  • originality
