About the competition
A language reflects the history, culture and worldview of its native speakers. Learning a new language gives you access to a new culture and provides you with a wealth of information about the country and its people. Of course, this is also true for the Dutch language.
Competition: What do you consider to be the most characteristic Dutch word, phrase or proverb that reflects the Netherland's current culture and worldview? Please cite the example you have in mind and explain in English why you find it informative.

Submissions will be assessed on:
› originality
› coherence between example and explanation

The winner of the competition will get one of the following Dutch courses starting in January 2014:

Notes
› The winner will be contacted by e-mail and will also be announced on the competition page of the Academic Language Centre's website and on its Facebook page.
› The normal fee for participants is 680 euros for this type of course.
› The winner can choose between daytime and evening courses and is strongly advised to take a free placement test.

All participants will get a little present when subscribing to any Dutch or English course starting in January or February 2014. All you have to do is fill in the form on the Academic Language Centre’s website after enrolling.
About The Academic Language Centre
The Academic Language Centre is part of the Faculty of Humanities at Leiden University and provides language services both to students and staff of Leiden University and to external parties (individual learners and institutions).
Leiden University’s Language Centre works with experienced teachers who are specialists in providing language and cultural training to candidates with a higher academic background.
