Netherlands predicted to win 28 medals at Rio Olympics

Netherlands predicted to win 28 medals at Rio Olympics

The Netherlands can expect to win 28 medals at the Rio Olympic Games, if predictions from sport data bureau Gracenote prove to be correct.

Gracenote (previously Infostrada) foresees the Netherlands winning six gold, 11 silver and 11 bronze medals during the games, which would place the Netherlands 13th on the medal tally.

If successful, this windfall of 28 medals would be a record for the Netherlands, overtaking their current record of 25 medals at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

How to predict a win

To determine which athletes have the highest chance of winning a medal, Gracenote analysed results from recent sporting events including Olympic Games, world championships and world cups.

Factors such as the time elapsed since analysed events and the strength of the competition are also been taken into account.

Predictions for other countries

Gracenote also released a virtual medal table where the predicted performance of different countries can be compared.

As usual, the United States is expected to top the table with 88 medals, 38 of which are expected to be gold. China is predicted to be ranked second with 71 medals, and Great Britain third with 56.

Russia is expected to bring in a reduced amount of 42 medals, as a consequence of the state-sponsored doping scandal, placing them sixth on the virtual medal table.
