Brexit-related events in the Netherlands in March

Brexit-related events in the Netherlands in March

In light of the upcoming Brexit decision, it’s a no-brainer that – British or otherwise – European citizens should stay as informed as possible.

While the news is keeping us well topped-up with Brexit information, some people might also benefit from attending events where they can stand with kindred spirits and receive moral support. In the midst of this media storm, there’s nothing like hearing things spoken by real live human beings at live events.

Events about Brexit in the Netherlands in March 2019

Here are three extremely different Brexit-related events taking place in the Netherlands in March, from wacky comedy to political discourse and useful advice:

The Brexit Conversation

  • Where: Uilenburgersjoel Nieuwe Uilenburgerstraat 91, 1011 LM Amsterdam
  • When: March 16 at 1.30pm

Two discerning minds come together for The Brexit Conversation to talk about what Brexit might mean for The Netherlands, for the UK, and – since it’s St. Patrick’s weekend – for Ireland. For the occasion, the organisers have flown in Ireland’s foremost political and cultural commentator Fintan O’Toole, to have a discussion with his Dutch counterpart, the renowned journalist Joris Luyendijk.

The two journalists are sure to raise apt questions for the uncertain times we live in. As we move closer to Brexit, there’s no clear way to predict how Europe will change and how the possible changes will affect the people. This is part of the 2019 St. Patrick’s Festival Amsterdam, the annual Irish-Dutch cultural festival in the heart of Amsterdam.

Sunday Roast – The Great British Rip Off

  • Where: Paradiso, Weteringschans 6-8, 1017 SG Amsterdam
  • When: March 17 at 4pm in English and at 8pm in Dutch and English

As some of you might agree, if you don’t laugh about Brexit, you’re likely to cry instead. That’s why Paradiso is presenting Sunday Roast – The Great British Rip Off, a “corset-busting programme” filled to the brim with comedians who will help you laugh your Brexit woes away - at least temporarily.

Howard Komproe hosts a night of laughter and fun, joined live by comedians Adam Fields, William Sutton, Nigel Williams and Ken Parsons, as well as on-screen hilarity.

There will be music by DJ Alec Smart and the singer-songwriter duo Luke Nyman and Rei Satoshi. The afternoon show, beginning at 4pm, is exclusively in English, and the evening show, which begins at 8pm, is in a mixture of Dutch and English.

Don’t be fooled – there’s no food served at the event, let alone a Sunday roast dinner. Just laughs, tomfoolery and camaraderie.

Rotterdam preparing for Brexit

  • Where: Rotterdam City Hall, Coolsingel 40, 3011 AD Rotterdam
  • When: Tuesday, March 19 at 2.15pm

This event is for anyone wondering how the impending Brexit changes could affect their business. The Rotterdam preparing for Brexit seminar aims to keep business owners up to date on the latest developments regarding Brexit, and give concrete advice on how your company can best prepare in the case of a deal or a no deal. On the other hand, the seminar will also discuss the possible perks that Brexit might bring.

Registration is required, so sign up via the link above to secure your place.

Speakers include Jan-Willem Thoen from the PwC Brexit office, Sip van der Weg from Dutch customs, Jill Hawkins from HMRC, Joost Bekink from IND and alderman Kathmann. They will explain how the customs authorities are preparing for the outcome in the UK and the Netherlands. You will gain information about taxes, accounting and legal matters. The event is organised by PwC, Rotterdam Gemeente and Rotterdam Partners.

Keep on top of your Brexit facts

Whether you want to stay informed, mingle with others in a similar situation as yourself or just have a good laugh about the current state of affairs, it's good to know what's happening this month as Europe waits for whatever comes to pass on March 29.
