Drive through the Gates of Light at the Dutch Afsluitdijk

Those travelling along the 32 kilometre Dutch Afsluitdijk gates, which keep the North Sea at bay, will be able to experience a wonderful show of lights as the 60 gate structures illuminate with their passing through.

The Gates of Light is just one aspect of the Icoon Afsluitdijk project funded by the Dutch government and designed by Dutch designer and innovator Daan Roosegaarde and his team.

The lights are, in fact, not lights but a retro-reflective layer, which reflects the light coming from the headlamps of passing cars, therefore no energy is required and the gates are not lit if there are no cars on the road.
