[Video] 400 years of the University of Groningen

This video, called An Eternal Edict, celebrates 400 years of the University of Groningen's existence and features historic moments from the rich life of the institution.

It starts in 1614, when an academy was set up in the region of Groningen. What was unique about this academy was that it was not established by the pope or a sovereign, as in other parts of Europe, but by the people themselves, who wanted a university for the development of the city and society as a whole.

The video includes images of Aletta Jacobs (1871, the first female student), various royal visits (including Queen Wilhelmina in 1914, Queen Juliana in 1964 and King Willem Alexander in 2014) and the Nobel Prize being awarded to Professor F. Zernike.
