A virtual tour of Amsterdam's 19th century expansion

Stadsarchief Amsterdam has released another stunning computer-generated animation that illustrates the explosive growth Amsterdam experienced throughout its second Golden Age in the 1800s.

See construction of the beautiful lost Paleis voor Volksvlijt (destroyed by fire in 1929), the first Heineken Brewery and the Rijksmuseum.

The 19th century also marked an era of massive land reclamation projects that created the Nordzeekanal, most of Amsterdam Noord and Stationseiland, where Central Station stands today.
