Dutch municipalities are set to collect 8,5 percent more in municipal taxes in 2024 compared to the previous year. The increase in municipal taxes will be the highest seen in the Netherlands in more than a decade, since 2007. 

Municipalities to collect 13 billion euros in tax in 2024

According to Statistics Netherlands (CBS), municipal budgets show that combined, they are set to receive over 13 billion euros in 2024. The statistics show that municipalities generate the lion’s share of their income from property tax, waste tax, sewerage tax and parking costs.

Other levies, such as tourist tax and building permits are harder to estimate in advance, therefore the budget is not final. That said, in the previous decade with the exception of 2020, the taxes collected for these purposes were higher than budgeted. 

5,5 billion euros will be collected in property taxes this year

The data shows that 5,5 billion euros will be collected in property taxes across the Netherlands in 2024. The property valuation calculation (WOZ) has a particularly strong influence on the amount of property tax paid by residents of the Netherlands.

In 2023, the value of properties once again started to increase in the Netherlands, a trend set to continue through 2024. This means that the WOZ has increased significantly leading to increases in property taxes. 

Property tax will therefore increase by an average of 7,5 percent this year. According to NOS, the WOZ value for a home was 368.000 euros on January 1, 2023, which is 16,1 percent more than was the case one year earlier.
