Dutch hospitals more productive

The total productivity of the hospitals in the Netherlands grew by 14,7 percent (2003-2009), according to the Centre for Innovation and Public Sector Efficiency Studies of TU Delft.

Productivity growth
 nursing staff (34,9 percent)
 medical personnel (14,5 percent)
 management and staff (12,4 percent)
 other personnel (10,1 percent)

Disadventages of scale
At the same time, increase in scale led to partial negation of the productivity growth; 1 percent expansion of production equals 1,23 percent extra costs. "The policy should be focused on stopping a further increase in scale through a ban on mergers and facilitating the entry of new suppliers, for example," says director of IPSE Studies Jos Blank.
