Postdoctoral researcher Transboundary Legal Studies (0.5 FTE)

Within the TLS department, we have room for a part-time postdoc researcher. The researcher concerned will participate in a multidisciplinary research project in which he/she works as a legal postdoc with researchers with a medical / behavioural and media sciences background.

The project focuses on the possibility of expanding smoke-free zones. How does this protect children and what does it take to introduce them in the Netherlands? What legal obstacles are encountered when introducing such smoke-free zones? In this project, we intend to learn from other countries where new zones have already been made smoke-free.

It concerns an appointment of 0.5 FTE for two years. During this period, you investigate the nature, implementation and enforcement of existing regulation of smoke-free zones in a number of countries in the world. You also look at the local initiatives in the cities of Rotterdam and Groningen. You investigate these domestic and local bans also from a human rights perspective, paying specific attention the interests and rights of children. Qualitative research (interviews) forms part of the research.


For this project, we are looking for a motivated researcher with a (nearly) completed PhD in a relevant legal discipline, for example human rights, sociology of law or administrative law.

Good knowledge of the Dutch language is an advantage, as well as an international profiling. You have affinity with the topic and you are motivated to collaborate with researchers from other disciplines, and to travel to Groningen and across the Netherlands to conduct the research.

You work independently, are responsible and enthusiastic and you have excellent communication, research and writing skills. You also have a strong conceptual ability, good presentation skills and you are very result oriented.

Salary Benefits:

In accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, we offer:

• a salary depending on education and experience with a maximum of € 3637,- (salary scale 1) 1 gross per month at full working time
• 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end bonus on the annual gross income
• the possibility of opting for a 36, 38 or 40-hour working week (assuming full-time employment); the University of Groningen also has a generous leave arrangement
• good training activities
• a temporary appointment for a period of 2 years with an appointment size of 0.5 FTE.

Date of commencement: as soon as possible, no later than 1 November 2019

The interviews will take place in the course of September 2019. A writing exercise may form part of the assessment.
