PhD position in Dynamical Systems (1.0 FTE)

Research / Academic
The Bernoulli Institute (BI) of the Faculty of Science and Engineering of the University of Groningen has an opening for a PhD candidate working under the supervision of Dr Hildeberto Jardón Kojakhmetov.

The PhD candidate will be part of the Dynamical Systems, Geometry, and Mathematical Physics (DSGMP) group. The main focus of the PhD candidate will be to extend Geometric Singular Perturbation Theory (GSPT) to adaptive network(ed) systems. The main theoretical work will be built around GSPT, Equivariant Dynamical Systems, and Network Theory. In particular it is planned that the research of the PhD candidate will better relate symmetries induced by a network structure, topological properties of a network, and qualitative methods of dynamical systems for the mathematical analysis of the dynamic network. The research also envisions the development and refinement of computational algorithms which aid in the analysis of singularly perturbed network(ed) systems. These algorithms will help by carrying out symbolic computations and reliable simulations. We plan that the potential applications of the PhD candidate's research will be developed in collaboration with the MINDS group ( of the University of Groningen.

The successful candidate for this PhD position will have the following qualifications/qualities:

● a Master’s degree in Mathematics / Applied Mathematics / Theoretical Physics / or related areas
● knowledge of, and/or Master Thesis broadly within, Dynamical Systems Theory is considered an advantage
● proficiency in a programming language is considered an asset, but is not necessary
● excellent knowledge of written and spoken English
● excellent communication skills, so as to function as a proactive group member
● enthusiasm and initiative to perform creative research in an interdisciplinary setting.

Salary Benefits:

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

● a salary of € 2,395 gross per month in the first year, up to a maximum of € 3,061 gross per month in the fourth and final year
● a full-time position (1.0 FTE)
● a holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income
● an 8.3% year-end bonus.

The position is offered for four years. The successful candidate will first be offered a temporary position of one year with the option of renewal for another three years. Prolongation of the contract is contingent on sufficient progress in the first year to indicate that a successful completion of the PhD thesis within the contract period is to be expected. A PhD training programme is part of the agreement and the successful candidate will be enrolled in the Graduate School of the Faculty.
