PhD Candidate/Postdoctoral Researcher in Computational Neuroscience

Research / Academic
Nijmegen

Description:

Your research involves computational modelling of the eye-head gaze-orienting control system which is implicated in complex multisensory re-orienting sensorimotor tasks. Keywords: spiking neural networks, optimal control, reinforcement learning, machine learning, sensor fusion.

This is a sub-project of the ERC advanced grant project ORIENT and involves a collaboration with the Visual Robotics lab of the Instituto Técnico in Lisbon. Its mission is to understand the neural mechanisms of sensory processing and goal-directed motor control in complex multisensory environments, in health and disease, and to implement this knowledge in a hardware (eye-head) robotic system, which will be developed in collaboration with the Lisbon group. You will develop advanced computational models of the human audio-visual orienting system and perform psychophysical studies with current state-of-the-art experimental equipment.

Requirements:

  • you are strongly motivated to conduct challenging interdisciplinary empirical and model-driven research;
  • experience with computational modelling, machine learning, and quantitative data analysis is highly desirable;
  • affinity with experimental psychophysical work is recommended.

PhD Candidate: you have a Master’s degree in biophysics, computational neuroscience or machine learning, artificial intelligence, biomedical engineering, or a related field.
Postdoctoral Researcher: a PhD in computational neuroscience or a related field.

Salary Benefits:

  • employment: 1.0 FTE
  • PhD position: the gross starting salary amounts to €2,266 per month based on full-time employment, and will increase to €2,897 in the fourth year (P scale).

Postdoc position: a maximum salary of €4,166 gross per month based on a 38-hour working week (scale 10).

  • in addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus
  • PhD position: you will be appointed for an initial period of 18 months, after which your performance will be evaluated. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 2.5 years.

Postdoc position: you will be appointed for an initial period of 18 months, after which your performance will be evaluated. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 1.5 years

  • you will be classified as a PhD Candidate or Postdoctoral Researcher in the Dutch university job-ranking system (UFO);
  • you will be able to make use of our Dual Career Service where our Dual Career Officer will assist with family related support, such as child care, and help your partner prepare for the local labour market and with finding an occupation

You will be selected on the basis of excellence, a strong computational background, willingness and enthusiasm to engage in multidisciplinary research, relevant academic background and training, strong academic references and/or prior publications.
