PhD Candidate: Spectrometer for Multispecies Breath Analysis

The PhD project involves the development of a spectrometer for multispecies breath analysis using external cavity quantum cascade lasers/interband cascade lasers (EC-QCLs -QCL/ICL) or extended tuneable DFB-QCL/ICL. The project is a collaboration with Alpes Lasers (Neuchatel, Switzerland) and Argos Med, Karlsruhe (Germany) within an international consortium supported by the H2020-SFS-2018-2020, ’Fact-based personalised nutrition for the young – Nutrishield’ project.


Your responsibilities and tasks:

  • Development of a spectrometer for the detection of volatiles in exhaled breath gases using E-QCL/ICL or extended tuneable DFB-QCL/ICL.
  • Measurement of the exhaled volatiles.
  • Data analysis and interpretation.


  • Master’s degree in physics or a related discipline;
  • good knowledge of optics, laser spectroscopy, and lock-in techniques;
  • prior experimental experience with semiconductor lasers and/or spectroscopy;
  • programming skills;
  • fluency in English is required.

Salary Benefits:

  • employment: 1.0 FTE
  • a maximum gross monthly salary of € 2,897 based on a 38-hour working week
  • the gross starting salary amounts to €2,266 per month, and will increase to €2,897 in the fourth year
  • in addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus
  • you will be appointed for an initial period of 18 months, after which your performance will be evaluated. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 2.5 years
  • you will be classified as a PhD Candidate in the Dutch university job-ranking system (UFO)
  • you will be able to make use of our Dual Career Service where our Dual Career Officer will assist with family related support, such as child care, and help your partner prepare for the local labour market and with finding an occupation
