Turn your bike into a super bike!02 November 2013, by Elzi Lewis
The Netherlands is known the world over for its bicycle culture, but climate change and increasing oil prices are now making cycling an attractive option for people of all nationalities.
As urban cycling increases in popularity, a new device aims to make bicycle commutes easier, faster, and greener than ever before.
A simple idea
Called the FlyKly Smart Wheel, this mechanism (the brainchild of an NY-based company) can be added to any ordinary bicycle.
Users simply attach the circular device to the back-wheel of a bike to get an "electric-powered pedal assist."
As you begin pedalling, the FlyKly's internal motor powers up and uses electricity to spin the wheels.
The device allows ordinary bikes to travel at speeds of 20mph (32 kmph) for up to 30 miles (48 km). By providing an extra boost of speed, this makes cycling a more efficient mode of transport and provides a welcome break for tired legs.
About the FlyKly Smart Wheel
The FlyKly’s lithium battery can be easily charged to full capacity in two to three hours. The device also automatically recharges when you’re cycling downhill, giving it extra "energy smart" kudos.
And in case you're worried about losing control of your newly speedy wheels: have no fear! You can easily set a maximum speed for your FlyKly via an iPhone, android device or Pebble smart watch.
Linking your FlyKly with a smart device also allows you to trace your bicycle via GPS, in case it ever gets stolen.
The product is currently at the funding stage on Kickstarter. Developers hope to have it commercially available in May 2014.
