Dutch farmers sick of tulip trampling tourists resort to harsher measures
Recently, a new campaign was launched to deter tourists from entering the tulip fields and causing thousands of euros of damage to the crops. Measures such as banners, signs, crowd barriers and volunteers were all used to this end. However, this was clearly not enough to stop tourists from barging into the fields for the perfect picture. Dutch farmers have had enough.
Tulip-friendly selfies
Just the other day, the Netherlands Board of Tourism and Conventions (NBTC) released a video in anticipation of the hordes of tourists that visit during Easter weekend. This video informed tourists about taking tulip-friendly selfies.
Dutch farmers have had enough
Despite the efforts of the campaign and the NBTC’s video, some tourists decided to feign ignorance and enter the tulip fields anyway. Dutch farmers have had enough. One such farmer is Nick van der Zon, who has decided to resort to harsher measures and put up barbed wire all around his land.
(Video is in Dutch and English).
