Celebrate the convergence of urbanity and literature during the City2Cities Festival!

What is City2Cities?

City2Cities is an annual international literature festival that takes place in the historic centre of Utrecht and seeks to highlight the work of foreign authors through comparative analyses, lectures, debates and social events.

The main theme of the festival is, of course, "the city."

The 21st century has seen urbanisation on a massive scale which, along with the advancements in communication and transportation technology, has redefined the way many people live and interact.

Seeking to address questions such as "What does it mean to be a city dweller?" and "What does the city mean for our literature?", City2Cities provides a platform to reflect on various literary traditions and their relationships to the city.

Each year, two metropolises are selected as subjects for analysis through the eyes of their contemporary and historical writers.

Previous editions have included Edinburgh and Stockholm (2011), Barcelona and Prague (2012) and Lisbon and Berlin (2013).

City2Cities 2014: Dublin and Budapest

For the 2014 edition of City2Cities, the emphasis is on Dublin and Budapest.

Dublin was named a UNESCO City of Literature in 2010, both for the work of modern writers such as Anne Enright and for the depth of literary heritage stemming from the city that influenced the likes of Samuel Beckett, James Joyce and Oscar Wilde.

Budapest, meanwhile, retains a rich literary tradition inspired by a confluence of culture, language and the many events that have shaped the pearl of the Danube over time. Known for its Grand Cafés and coffee house culture, Budapest has been the birthplace and source of inspiration for some of the world's most notable author's including György Konrad, Sándor Márai, Dezsö Kosztolányi and Peter Nádas.

The events taking place during City2Cities will highlight the role urban life played in these and contemporary authors' works through debates, parties and lectures.
