The 16th edition of the Movies that Matter Festival will be taking place at the Filmhuis Den Haag and the Theater aan het Spui in The Hague with a special focus on nuclear safety.

About the Movies that Matter Festival

The Movies that Matter Festival is an annual event that focuses on issues of human rights, peace and justice through the use of cinema and an associated programme of debates, lectures and discussions.

Believing that the camera is a powerful tool against social injustice, Movies that Matter works to screen and recognise films that inspire viewers to confront contemporary societal problems with informed, passionate responses.

The festival features two main sections: A Matter of ACT featuring ten documentaries about human rights defenders in co-operation with Amnesty International, and the Camera Justitia programme, sponsored by vfonds, that includes films and debates about international legal dilemmas.

Not ending with the festival, Movies that Matter works to take the films on tour by offering screenings in various theatres both within the Netherlands and internationally, as part of a wider mission to educate and inform viewers about human rights concerns.

Movies that Matter 2014: Themes

This year's main programme theme is nuclear safety (Atomic).

Coinciding with the Nuclear Security Summit taking place in The Hague on March 24 and 25, the programme will feature five films, debates and a talk-show about topics such as uranium trading, preventing nuclear disasters and nuclear energy reliance.

Additional themes of the 2014 edition include globalisation (Greed), the right to self-determination (Colours) and the freedom to choose a partner (Love).
