Rotterdam: Alive at Night
Since 2002, the organisers of Rotterdam Museum Night have sought to offer visitors a new perspective on the city's cultural institutions by creating a night-time showcase.
With more than 50 institutions taking part in the 2014 edition, the programme has become massive and includes a diverse mix of exhibitions, special workshops, dance and theatrical performances, live music, parties, urban interventions and more.
This year's theme is Sporen or Tracks in English.
The idea behind Tracks is to acknowledge history ("tracking down the past") while utilising this knowledge to move forward and create ("blazing new tracks"). Overarching, the participants will all interpret the theme differently.
While the Stadsarchief will help visitors discover their own "tracks" in Rotterdam's various neighbourhoods, Witte de With will challenge the concept of how "tracks" of evidence are being used in contemporary art to re-think the aesthetics of crime.
This city-wide celebration of art and culture challenges both the audience's and institutions' typical conception of the museum and the result is wondrous.
