Dragon Boat Festival 2014Festivals / Rotterdam
September 20-21 2014, 10am - 11pm
After a successful first edition, the racing returns to the Kralingse Bos in Rotterdam during the second annual Dragon Boat Festival!
Dragon boats, races & concerts
The focus of the festival is of course the use of traditional dragon boats in a series of exciting races!
Historically used in the Pearl River Delta region of Guangdong province in China, the dragon boats measure at least 12,5 meters long by one meter wide and are powered by 16 rowers and one drummer.
They get their name from the fact that the bow and stern are decorated as the head and tail of an ancient Chinese dragon.
Requiring rhythm, stamina and teamwork, the boats races are short and exciting, spanning 250 meters and lasting just a minute and a half.
Great for audiences, the event is more than a day of just friendly competition.
Finding place alongside the dragon boats is an entertaining programme of informal theatre acts, local bands and DJs spinning a mix of tunes!
