This year, January 31 marks the beginning of the Chinese New Year - the Year of the Horse!

The most important event on the Chinese calendar, the start of the Lunar New Year is a festive occasion involving family gatherings, traditional foods (a salad of raw fish for prosperity!) a street festival with fireworks and lion and dragon dances to expel bad spirits.

In the Netherlands, local Chinese communities in Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam host their own annual festivals to celebrate the New Year.

Other themed festivities include the Ming exhibition at De Nieuwe Kerk and special activities such as calligraphy and more lion-dances in de Bijenkorf!
