05 May 2014, Various
In the Netherlands, May 5 is Liberation Day and to mark this annual celebration of freedom, festivals in cities around the country will be organised called Bevrijdingsfestivals ('Liberation Festivals').
Liberation Day Festivals (Bevrijdingsfestivals) 2014
Often free of charge, the events extend to include activities for all ages.
In addition to the festivals, each year the comité 4 en 5 mei names "ambassadors" who act as representatives travelling around the Netherlands promoting the importance of acknowledging the freedoms fought for in World War II and today. This year's ambassadors include the Utrecht-based band Kensington, singer-songwriter Douwe Bob Posthuma and musician Gers Pardoel.
On the fifth of May, the festivals honour the idea that freedom is an important yet vulnerable state by asking people what freedom means to them, observing a moment of silence for those who fought for these freedoms and to celebrate freedom in the Netherlands.
Each festival will have a main stage, observe a moment of silence at five minutes before 5pm and have seperate activities organised at its Plein van de Vrijheid.
