After a successful tour abroad, Toneelgroep Amsterdam's The Entertainer returns to the Dutch capital for an exclusive final string of shows at the Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam!
The Entertainer, vaudeville & change
The Entertainer is a performance that uses the Rice family as an emotional microcosm to reflect wider societal change taking place in the era of vaudeville England.
Consisting of three generations of artists, the members of the Rice family are struggling to continue practicing their craft as the industry begins demanding something different.
Through a mix of songs and comic acts, the family's woes are played out through witty comedy, while their pessimism is reflected in cheerful songs that are undeniably tinged with pain.
Directed by Eric de Vroedt, the play uses five characters that society has deemed seemingly unimportant to reflect the "everyman" struggle of attempting to adjust to an industry and world in constant flux.
