In honour of Shakespeare's 450th birthday, the Shakespeare's Globe theatre company is embarking on a two-year world tour featuring "Hamlet" and Amsterdam's Stadsschouwburg will play host to the Dutch performances!
Hamlet: A Revenge Classic
Directed by the Globe's artistic director Dominic Dromgoole, this interpretation of "Hamlet" features the plot twists of the classics while emphasising the trademark gallows humour.
Performed by a small troupe of actors on a stripped-down stage, the story sees Hamlet coming home after learning of his father's (the king) death.
Finding that his uncle has married his mother to take the Danish throne, the ghost of the old king appears to Hamlet urging him to avenge his death.
With elements of politics, sexual intrigue, philosophy, violence and humour, Hamlet is regarded as an English language masterpiece and an expression of Shakespeare's genius.
