On September 7, thousands of swimmers will take to the famous Amsterdam canals to raise money for the fight against ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) during the Amsterdam City Swim!

Swimming for a cause

The Amsterdam City Swim began as a small initiative of 14 friends of the Hellespont Swimmers club who sought to honour their friend who was diagnosed with ALS.

In 2012, five of these 14 friends formed the Amsterdam City Swim foundation and created an event that saw 1.100 swimmers dive into the canals while raising 740.000 euros for research to help treat ALS.

An iconic image, the Amsterdam City Swim has become an annual favourite as good will combines with a festive celebration and show of support.

If you're not a swimmer, don't worry! The day is a celebration and the more cheering, the merrier!

Route of Amsterdam City Swim

The Amsterdam City Swim takes place through some of the most beautiful parts of the city centre!

All of the participants begin at the Marine Etablissement and swim via the Scheepvaartmuseum along the VOC ship, through the Keizersgracht and finish at the Reguliersgracht.

Awaiting the participants is a street shower, a medal and a pasta themed after party to restore those carbohydrates!

One of the main questions is always if Amsterdam's canals are clean enough to swim in. Although not the best swimming water, it's better than ever and, if the Queen swam in them, so can participants!
