As part of Helemaal Melkweg and Muziekfilms, Melkweg Cinema will be screening the documentary Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer which is about Russian punk band Pussy Riot and the legal troubles resulting from their protest against Russian President Vladimir Putin.

About Pussy Riot

Founded in 2011, Pussy Riot is a Russian, feminist punk-rock protest group based in Moscow consisting of approximately 11 women between the ages of 20 and 33.

The group is best known for their guerrilla protest strategy in which they host spontaneous, unauthorised performances in public locations with lyrics promoting feminism, LGBT rights and framing President Putin as a dictator.

On February 21, 2012, the group gained international attention when it performed their provocative music in Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and three of the group's members were subsequently arrested.

Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer

Produced in 2013 by Russian-British documentary filmmaker Mike Lerner and Maxim Pozdorovkin, Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer follows the court cases of band members Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich.

After being arrested for 'hooliganism motivated by religious hatred' for their Cathedral of Christ the Saviour protest performance, Alyokhina and Tolokonnikova were each subsequently sentenced to two years in prison.

Although released in December 2013 as part of a wider general amnesty for certain prisoners, the film highlights how these women came to represent a larger clash of 'East vs. West' through the intersection of artistic voice, moral protest and advocacy for freedom of speech in the context of a state plagued by corruption.
