ZigZag Children's FestivalFestivals / Amsterdam
05 September 2014, 12pm - 7pm
An initiative of the Waag Society, the ZigZag Children's Festival brings together Dutch artists, creative volunteers and students to host fascinating activities about textile production, digital design and craftsmanship for children 3 to 12 years old!
ZigZag teaches textile heritage
Taking place in the heart of Amsterdam on the Nieuwmarkt, the goal of the festival is to encourage children to learn more about the roots and evolution of craft and textile design as it relates to European heritage.
With the rise of mass production and increasing reliance on technology, the ZigZag Festival will host workshops and activities that highlight the role of the individual in the manufacturing and design process.
They will show this human side of design through interdisciplinary activities such as making music through knitting, showing how to make your own loom, using LED technology to create stuffed animals and imprinting special "talking" data on clothing.
In addition to these open activities, visitors can also register for one of the workshops, including 3D weaving and contemporary loom building.

Funded in part by the European Union, the festival has a very international character with sister events taking place in Rome and Sofia.
Bring the family to Nieuwmarkt for a day full of hands-on workshops, demonstrations and a fascinating look at the role of textile and craftsmanship in European history.
