After a successful first edition, the Amsterdam Zine Jam returns this fall with a full programme of activities and workshops dedicated to the culture and art of independent publishing!

Zines & independent publishing

In an age of blogs and increasingly digital publishing platforms, the Amsterdam Zine Jam looks to bring attention to the sub-cultures of independent publishing.

Often regarded as a reaction to traditional commercial methods of printing and distribution, "zines" are self-published mixes of texts and images with circulations of, typically,1.000 editions or less. Rising to prominence in the 1930s, the amateur-published zines were vital outlets in the pre-internet era for distributing material that strayed too far from the mainstream for major publishers.

Especially with regard to feminist, LGBT, sci-fi, progressive art and design, politics and punk scenes, zines were adopted as a main method to circulate essays and images that challenged norms and conventions while strengthening communities.

Although the amount of zines decreased with the advent of the internet, the publications still act as an important outlet for disseminating knowledge or works that serve special interest communities, individual expression or those ignored by commercial publishers.

Building on the strong tradition of zine publishing, the Amsterdam Zine Jam will bring attention to the contemporary zine scene through workshops, lectures and artistic displays of zine culture.

Finding place in the beautiful Felix Meritis in the heart of Amsterdam, the 2014 Zine Jam will see the return of the Zine Forest installation with contributions from publishers from around the world, the do it yourself Zine Machine and an on the spot Comic Sketch Battle.

Engaging workshops will allow visitors to participate in a number of zine-inspired activities, from making their own zine to becoming a part of the wider zine scene by having their story recorded.
