International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam 2014Exhibitions / Amsterdam
29 May 2014 - 24 August, Various times
The International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) returns for its sixth edition, examining the theme "Urban By Nature."
IABR 2014: Urban By Nature
Curated by Dirk Sijmons, the IABR 2014 will analyse the current relationship between our conceptions of nature and its role in urban life.
With more than half of the world's population now residing in cities, the urban habitat has become humanity's "natural" habitat.
This reconceiving of the natural environment is the starting point of the biennale's investigation into how classical elements of nature have been, and can be, incorporated into the built environment.
Using the lens of landscape architecture, the biennale wants to emphasise the importance of better planning and urban design as tools for solving many environmental problems caused by cities.
The IABR challenges visitors to imagine the city as our natural ecology, to better understand its structure and visualise its material flows as a step towards creating a more sustainable version of the urban life.
