About Gian Paolo Barbieri
Born in Milan in 1938, Barbieri was raised by a family of fabric wholesalers and throughout his youth was surrounded by people who valued the acute detail involved in the creation of clothing and fashion.
In addition to his familial influence, cinema would become an inspiration for his taste in capturing the glamour and elegance of movie stars.
With a natural eye for fashion photography, Barbieri joined Italian Vogue in 1965 and produced the cover of its first issue.
Building on his contributions to the Italian, French and American editions of Vogue, Barbieri would go on to work with some of the biggest names in fashion including Valentino, Armani, Yves Saint Laurent, Ferré, Versace and Dolce & Gabbana.
Barbieri is now considered to be one of the best international fashion photographers of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. His work and its subsequent influence has been credited with revolutionising the modern fashion advertising campaign.
