Listening to Third Grandmother's Stories performanceDance / Amsterdam
30 November 2012, 8.30pm
Inspired by conversations with her elderly great aunt, Chinese choreographer Wen Hui brings taboo issues like sex, freedom of speech and the powerful reign of Communism to the stage.
Hui conveys her "third grandmother’s" first hand experiences living through Mao’s Cultural Revolution, and other social upheavals in the last century.
The two women reconstruct the turbulent history of women in China. Together with Beijing's Living Dance Studio, Hui presents Chinese social taboos through dance, text and film.
From one of the viewers:
"What a stunningly beautiful production - a fascinating story, and a marvelous great-aunt. Had tears in my eyes at the closing scene. A story that will hopefully also be told in China; what a cultural difference, what a history, pain, taboos - and nevertheless happy film footage."
