Dutch National Ballet presents 'Swan Lake'Dance / Amsterdam
September 14-28 2014, Various
The Dutch National Ballet will be performing Tchaikovsky's legendary Swan Lake as choreographed by former artistic director Rudi van Dantzig.
Two swans, one ballerina
Composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Swan Lake is undoubtedly one of the most famous ballets in the world; often being referred to as the "ballet of ballets."
Along with his other classics The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker, Swan Lake is based on Russian folktales and recounts the story of Prince Siegfried falling under the spell of a beautiful swan, Odette.
Torn between good and evil, the Prince wants to love Odette, the virtuous White Swan, but is continuously tempted by the Black Swan, Odile.
Played by the same ballerina, taking on the roles of both Odette and Odile is a notoriously difficult task, as the dancer must stylistically switch between grace and an increasingly maddened passion.
Highly regarded for his commitment to his work and choreography, Swan Lake is still performed in the style of Rudi van Dantzig (1933-2012).

Working with Toer van Schayk, van Dantzig researched Tchaikovsky and was not only inspired by his musical compositions, but also by his letters and personal life.
