Orquesta de Instrumentos Reciclados Cateura at De BimhuisConcerts / Amsterdam
02 February, 4.30pm
In co-operation with the Prince Claus Fund, De Bimhuis proudly presents an evening of culture highlighting the intersection of music and innovation by presenting Paraguayan youth orchestra Orquesta de Instrumentos Reciclados Cateura.
Conceived by Favio Chavez (also the conductor), the Orquesta consists of 22 talented young musicians from Cateura, a town near Asunción, Paraguay, that is better known for its landfill than for its culture.
However, with the help of local craftsman and the community, an orchestra was created by using instruments fashioned out of discarded items found in the landfill.
An exemplar of cultural resilience, the Orquesta plays a range of music, from classic to pop, and travels both nationally and internationally as a testament to how ingenuity can transform communities.
This year, the Orquesta received a Prince Claus Award for its achievements in culture and development.
