Finding a place
The fact that mainly in big cities, there are not
enough properties to satisfy demand makes
housing in the Netherlands a very demanding
issue. However, there are several options for
expats to choose from.
Rental agencies
Subscribing (usually around 40 euros) to rental
agencies is the first step. Note that almost all of
them ask for one-month rent commission and a
deposit (one or two rents) in advance.

Contacting owners
Another option is to check Internet sites where
you can contact house owners directly and avoid
paying the subscription and the commission
fees. As always, there is a catch: your chances
of getting your ideal apartment are getting lower
and you should be aware of the spam ads.

Online housing ads
Lastly, there are specific sites exhibiting online
ads for available rooms as well as search
engines. In the Netherlands, it is very common
to live with people that you do not know. In this
way you lose part of your autonomy, but renting
a room proves to be cost effective and a chance
to meet interesting international people.
