Since 1995, all people who:
originate from the Schengen Area (Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the Netherlands)
› have a valid proof of identification (not driving license)
 afford (at least) 34 euros per day of stay
 are able to justify (with official papers) the reason of visit
 are not considered to threaten national security, public order and international relations
may visit the Netherlands for a short stay (90 days) without any official permission (i.e. visa).

All non-EU / EEA / Swiss citizens need to report to the local Aliens Police within three days of arrival (both short and long stay allowance).

Moreover, for a stay of more than 90 days, you must register with the municipality (Gemeentelijke Basisadministratie) within five days of arrival and apply for a residence permit.

If you are a prospective student, your university may apply for the permit on your behalf. If you are planning on studying in one of the worldwide famous Dutch universities, you must definitely visit the Student Visa Wizard, which clarifies all the necessary procedures you should use, if any.

In most cases, the same procedures apply for prospective employees.
