50 Years of Amnesty International

By Anita Kalmane l May. 28, 2011, 11:05am l Other l 0 Comments

Amnesty International celebrates its 50th anniversary on May 28. In 1961, British lawyer Peter Benenson learnt about two Portuguese students imprisoned for raising a toast to freedom and published an article, "The Forgotten Prisoners" in the Observer newspaper. That article launched the "Appeal for Amnesty 1961," a worldwide campaign that provoked a remarkable response. This was the genesis of Amnesty International. Today, this global movement is present in more than 150 countries and territories (including the Netherlands) and supported by more than three million people. "Amnesty International’s vision is of a world in which every person enjoys all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other i...

5th Annual DoGooder Non-Profit Awards

By Sergios l Feb. 18, 2011, 01:02pm l Other l 1 Comments

The 5th Annual DoGooder Non-Profit Awards are on! Nonprofits that made a video in 2010 showing all the great work they did for their important issues (health, arts, environment, human rights, disaster relief etc.) have the chance to participate, gain exposure and win prizes. The DoGooder Nonprofit Video Awards are presented by See3 Communications and YouTube, with support from the Case Foundation, Flip Video and the Nonprofit Technology Network. Unfortunately, at this time, only nonprofits registered in the US, Canada, UK and Australia can submit videos. A bit unfair for the rest of the world, don’t you think?

On a Bet, Party People Fill KLM Flight to Miami Using Twitter

By IamExpat Spotter l Jan. 11, 2011, 11:01pm l Other l 0 Comments

DJs, promoters, label reps and "professional party people" from the Netherlands have persuaded Dutch airline KLM to add an extra flight to its roster. In a new twist on crowd-buying, the initiators of Fly2Miami made a bet with KLM on Twitter to organise a non-stop flight from Amsterdam to Miami. If Fly2Miami could get 351 seats reserved before December 6, KLM would add a flight to its schedule on March 21, 2011 specifically for people attending the Ultra Music Festival and related parties. The initiative was prompted by a Dutch filmmaker tweeting about the lack of a direct flight from Amsterdam to Miami, a query that the airline's Twitter team rapidly responded to with a wager. Exceeding everyone's expectations, the flight was fully booked within five ...
